Firmus Energy

Firmus is a gas distribution and gas supply business located in Antrim, Northern Ireland. Its gas distribution business is located in the Ten Towns area of Northern Ireland stretching east from Derry/Londonderry towards Antrim and then south to Newry. The gas distribution network continues to be built with 1,600km currently completed and another 800km to be laid over the next five years.

Firmus employs 130 staff directly across both the distribution and supply businesses managing the network build out, new connections to the network and ensuring its gas is supplied to its 100,000+ customers. Firmus operates the distribution network under an exclusive perpetual licence.

The Firmus distribution network is a natural monopoly and it is therefore regulated by the Northern Ireland Utility Regulator under a revenue cap price control framework. Where Firmus supplies gas to the Ten Towns area its supply business is also regulated. Where Firmus supplies gas outside the Ten Towns area it is unregulated.

Given its relatively recent installation, the design, construction and operation of the Firmus gas distribution network is extremely efficient, robust and high quality.

Since 2005, Kier construction has been the framework subcontractor, renewing its contract four times, and it will continue to be the framework contractor up to 2023. Firmus is 100% owned by funds managed by Equitix.
