Sheringham Shoal

Sheringham Shoal is an offshore wind farm located in the Greater Wash between 17 and 23 km from the Norfolk coast, north of the town of Sheringham. It covers an area of approximately 35 km2. The wind farm became fully operational in 2012.

The wind farm has a combined capacity of 317MW made up of 88 Siemens wind turbines, each with a capacity of 3.6MW, and supplies the equivalent of 220,000 homes with clean energy. It has two 900 tonne offshore substations and two 132 kV marine cables which come ashore at Weybourne. The power is then transmitted to a substation in Norwich where it enters the national grid.

Power generated by the wind farm is sold via long-term power purchase agreements. Two renewables obligation certificates for each MWh produced are also sold as part of the same agreement.

The wind farm was constructed over a two year period by Statkraft and Equinor, which is also the operator of the offshore wind farm. Current co-shareholders include Equinor, Green Investment Group and InfraRed, together holding a 74.7% ownership.
